Like Rick Tocchet, I'm ready itching to pick some odds.

Going into my first weekend of this offseason blog, I'm tempted to find some sports that you might not normally think of when it comes to picking winners. Plus, I'm still trying to figure out the whole money line thing. I'm starting myself out with 100 "points" and forcing myself to put 20 "points" on each event of the weekend. I'll keep a running tally of my "point" account and see how well (or likely poorly) I do. Keep checking back to see how this pans out and like Julio Lugo, I'll adjust it as needed.

WNBA - Chicago Sky +7 at Minnesota Lynx 5/25/2007

The Chicago Sky made news this week after pulling off a blockbuster trade with the Washington Mystics, sending Monique Currie to Washington for Chasity Melvin. The Sky ( 0-2) take on a formidable but unlucky opponent in the Minnesota Lynx (0-3) . The Sky will need all the help they can get after they terminated the contract of guard Deanna Jackson on Wednesday, one month after she hit an opposing player in a parking lot after Israel's national league title game. And people say that the NBA players are thugs. Also, former GW women's basketball standout Cathy Joens was just signed by Chicago, So I'll put an Andrew Jackson on the Sky and the points.

NFL Europe - Rhein Fire +10 at Frankfurt Galaxy 5/26/07

The Fire (2-4) are in last place and the Galaxy (4-2) are in first. However, the Fire have wide receivers named J.J. Outlaw and P.K. Sam. When your wide recievers are confident enough to go by initials instead of their first name, you know you're good enough to beat anyone. Okay, good enough to beat two teams at least. Either way, Outlaw is the only guy I think I've ever heard of on either team, so I'll take the Fire with the points.

NASCAR - Coca-Cola 600 5/27/07

Whoooooo! Feel the rush, feel the excitement, feel the fizzy bubbles of Coca-Cola! And Charlotte!

Ok, now that we got that out of the way, NASCAR returns to Charlotte and the Lowe's Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600. The Lowe's Motor Speedway is also home to the Bank of America 500 in October. Where am I going with this one? Jimmie Johnson (#48) is sponsored by Lowe's, and he came in second place at the B of A 500 last year. Wouldn't you know it, he's a 3-1 favorite to win the Coca-Cola 600 this weekend. I smell conspiracy here/ Either that or motor oil. Johnson will have to watch out for Tony Stewart who drives for Home Depot. I think Stewart will have extra motivation this week because of the corporate rivalry. Or the fact that Tony is just a disagreeable A-Hole in general. Either way, I'll put 20 points on Jimme Johnson to win this week in Charlotte.

MLS - Kansas City Wizards at New England Revolution 5/27/07

I confess, I've been to more MLS games than I have pro and college football games combined. That being said, I was surprised to learn that a) KC has not folded yet, and b) the Revs have the best record in MLS. I think that's like being the skinniest kid at fat camp. The money line on this one is NE -105. I'm pretty sure that means I have to bet $105 to win $100. Since I'm playing in increments of 20 points, I'll adjust the line to play 20 (to win 19).

Arena League Football - New York Dragons -4.5 at New Orleans VooDoo 5/28/07

The 4-7 Dragons take on the 4-7 VooDoo in a battle of two mediocre teams. However, NY QB Aaron Garcia was named offensive player of the week for the second straight week. Can he make it a third straight week? Will New Orleans be able to turn things around after four straight losses (including a 78-34 drubbing at the hands of Jon Bon Jovi and the Philadelphia Soul)? Did anyone know that this game is on ESPN 2? I think the answer to all of these questions is a resounding "no," but I'm still willing to take New York giving 4.5 points.

Have a good weekend and enjoy!

Picking something besides my nose

With college football season over until the fall (or late summer if you want to get technical), I've found myself with very little to pick (and attempting to redeem myself after a sub-.500 year - let's not even talk about the bowl games). Sure, I've done pretty well picking the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness (two correct Trifectas in two races - not to toot my own horn), but EVERYONE picks horse racing, and let' be honest, how much insightful analysis can you do on a horse?

"Well, he looked good in his warmups this week, but he took a massive dump after coming off the track, so we could be in for a rough start at Belmont."

Not exactly the breakdown I'm famous for (okay, who am I kidding? Poop jokes are always funny.) With that being said, I've decided to analyze 5 weekend sporting events (for purely entertainment purposes) and give you the breakdown of them like only The Can can (Ha! I said Can-Can).

Check back later this week for more info and the picks . . .
