So I experimented with the off-season picking thing and it went as poorly as expected. Needless to say, you likely won't see another column from me until at least fall scrimages start. However, when something newsworthy happens in the world of NCAACF, chances are I'll have something to comment about it.
As reported this week, the Oklahoma Sooners 2005 8-4 season, which included a huge comeback win against the Ducks of Oregon, will now be recorded as 0-4. The Sooners, who vacate (not forfeit) all of their 2005 wins, do not go 0-12 as some previously thought. Why does this happen? I'm not really sure, but I think it has something to do with the games "never having been played."
How does this impact my picks? Well, technically it probably changes a few things from 2 seasons ago, but a) I don't have the patience to go back and see how it impacts my picks, and b) as in real life, does anyone really care? The answer? Not really. Bob Stoops now has 8 less career wins which kind of stinks for him, but does it change the fact that OU got their butts whupped by eventual National Champion Texas? No. In fact, three of OU's wins came against such powerhouses as Tulsa, Kansas State, and Kansas. Could Texas A&M, Baylor, and K-State make a case for instead finishing 5-5 and being bowl eligible? Perhaps. The fact of the matter is, this is a nice way for the Sooners to admit they were wrong. By losing 2 scholarships for the next two years are they any worse off (as well as dismissing OL J.D. Quinn and QB Rhett Bomar)? Maybe, maybe not.
My favorite reaction, and probably the one that sums the whole situation up best was that of OL J.D. Quinn. When reached on his cell phone, Quinn said he did not pay any attention to the infractions committee's ruling on Oklahoma, calling it "dumb" and referring to it with an expletive. Yes, J.D., it is dumb, and probably an expletive as well. However, I'm still trying to figure out how you managed to trump Kelvin Sampson, and make one of the world's most shady occupations (car salesman) even shadier. Well done, Sooners. Well done. I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to the OU - Miami matchup in Norman this season. With the penalized team of 2005 taking on the penalized team of 2006, this should be some can't miss football.
